You can find Snappers on all kinds of bottom. I have even had friends target them on mud bottom in the Gulf of Mexico.

But most of us will look for them on reefs whether natural or artificial. In the Keys and South Florida, look for Yellowtail Snapper in 35 - 85 feet, and Muttons from 85 - 200 feet. I have caught both in only 10 feet of water, but that involves anchoring & chumming rather than jigging (and in the Bahamas). It is a much larger investment in time in one spot. In the Gulf, find them best on wrecks.
